Animal Kingdom Baby Names

The Houston Zoo's new baby elephant now has a name! After taking votes to name the new offspring of Shanti, the zoo's new mama, the victor emerged: Mac. Welcome baby Mac!


There's still time to vote for the name of the Atlanta Zoo's new baby panda, who was born on Sept. 6 (traditionally, pandas are named when they are 100 days old). The ten names up for grabs are:


Xiao Tao, 小桃
(shao-tao) “little peach”
Mei Tao, 美桃
(may-tao) “beautiful peach”
Mei Lan, 美兰
(may-lan) “Atlanta beauty”
Mei Li, 美丽
(may-lee) “beautiful”
Ming Xing, 明星
(ming-shing) "bright star"
Ping Bao, 平宝
(ping - bao) “peacefulness & precious treasure”
Cheng Ya, 成娅
(chung-ya) “pretty Atlanta girl from Chengdu”
Ming Yue, 明月
(ming-yuu) “bright moon”
Chang Jiang, 长江
(chung-jung) “Yangtze River”
Tai Ji,太极
(tai-ji) “Tai Chi" (philosophical foundation of Taoism)
