BBN NEWS: The Popularity of Neveah

And if It's a Boy, Will It Be Lleh?

By JENNIFER 8. LEE, The New York Times

May 18- Chances are you don't have any friends named Nevaeh. Chances are today's toddlers will.

In 1999, there were only eight newborn American girls named Nevaeh. Last year, it was the 70th-most-popular name for baby girls, ahead of Sara, Vanessa and Amanda.

The spectacular rise of Nevaeh (commonly pronounced nah-VAY-uh) has little precedent, name experts say. They watched it break into the top 1,000 of girls' names in 2001 at No. 266, the third-highest debut ever. Four years later it cracked the top 100 with 4,457 newborn Nevaehs, having made the fastest climb among all names in more than a century, the entire period for which the Social Security Administration has such records.

Nevaeh is not in the Bible or any religious text. It is not from a foreign language. It is not the name of a celebrity, real or fictional.

Nevaeh is Heaven spelled backward.

The name has hit a cultural nerve with its religious overtones, creative twist and fashionable final "ah" sound. It has risen most quickly among blacks but is also popular with evangelical Christians, who have helped propel other religious names like Grace (ranked 14th) up the charts, experts say. By contrast, the name Heaven is ranked 245th.

"Of the last couple of generations, Nevaeh is certainly the most remarkable phenomenon in baby names," said Cleveland Kent Evans, president of the American Name Society and a professor of psychology at Bellevue University in Nebraska.

The surge of Nevaeh can be traced to a single event: the appearance of a Christian rock star, Sonny Sandoval of P.O.D., on MTV in 2000 with his baby daughter, Nevaeh. "Heaven spelled backwards," he said.

Among the many inspired by Mr. Sandoval's appearance was Jade San Luis, who named his first daughter Nevaeh two years later. "It felt original," said Mr. San Luis, 26, of Cerritos, Calif. "Now, not anymore."

Today Mr. Sandoval is introduced to and photographed with baby Nevaehs all the time. His own Nevaeh, now 6, skateboards and, when introduced, pipes up that her name is Heaven spelled backward. Does she understand the meaning of heaven? Mr. Sandoval replied, "She knows that is where her grandmother is."

Heaven backwards--is that like naming your baby Hell?

I think the name is beautiful, and not because it is "Heave" backwards, but because it has a nice ring to it.

If people don't like it, they don't have to use it, but making bad comments about it is not called for...

    To each their own.

I agree with the first commenter. This is an utterly stupid name — heaven backwards is hell, isn't it? Where anyone naming their kid Neveah should rot. It's not beautiful. It's idiotic — and probably rarely used by anyone with a least an 85 IQ.

There is a beautiful little girl with the perfect hue of red hair that goes to my church. Her name is Nevaeh. Her mother and grandparents led very unhappy lives until they came to know the Lord, and now they love Jesus and are very proud to share with people that Nevaeh's name is "heaven" spelled backwards. They want her to grow up with a better life than they had, and they want her to know the Savior so that she can go to HEAVEN someday. When they explain her name, no one ever thinks that "heaven" backwards could maybe be like "hell." When people see her and smile back at her sweet little smile, they think of heaven, not hell. - I think some people want their children's names to have something to do with the wonderful hope of heaven without actually naming their children "Heaven" because they think their children might get teased, or for many other reasons (there are plenty of understandable possibilities). If someone doesn't like the name Nevaeh, then they don't have to use it. But it does seem mean and harsh to say so scornfully that "heaven" backwards means "hell," when so many little children have been named Nevaeh on the premise of it having to do with HEAVEN. Besides, the Bible says nothing about "heaven" backwards being "hell" (it actually doesn't say anything about "heaven" backwards at all); so there's no law, principle, or moral truth that condemns the name Nevaeh.

My daughter's name is Neveah. We do not spell it like everyone else does, but we love the name. Whether other people like or dislike my child's name is not a concern to me. Why in the world would you even give a second thought to what one human names their child? Is your life that boring and lonely that you take the time to slam people whom you do not even know? And what would you name your child might I ask?

From the sound of your story, it appears you aren't a Christian. Therefore, your opinion on a name that connotates that there's a heaven is invalid. I feel sure that you can't possibly understand the meaning behind this fad. So, you should keep your biased articles to yourself. By the way, most Americans are Christians. That could easily explain the rise in popularity of this name. But, your eyes are closed to that reality too.

my daughter's name is Nevéah. my husband first heard the name 'nevaeh' like most people, when the lead singer of P.O.D. called his daughter that. my husband told me he would like to call our daughter 'neveah' & that it was heaven backwards. i explained to him heaven backwards was actually 'nevaeh' & there is no way that can be pronounced ne-vay-a. but i liked the sound of the name & the fact that it is an anagram of heaven. we didn't spell it incorrectly, we chose to spell it that way, with the understanding that it is an anagram. like a lot of other people it seems, we thought it was quite original. but of course there are no new ideas under the sun. i still love it, & love the fact that it has a beautiful meaning. the fact that it is 'made up' doesn't bother me. there are a lot of names that have no particular meaning & have been 'made up' which are now common names - just look at any baby name website.

To think of a childs name as hell just goes to show what kind of person/people you are,you must be mad in the head and have nothing better to do with your sad and pathetic lifes. lets hope that our new generations of nevaehs wont grow up to be as rude as some of you people. nevaeh is a lovelly name just as any other.

Oh, for pity's sake -- don't wear your faith on your sleeve. It's offensive. Naming your child like this is proselytizing, plainly and simply.

And it's really just very, very tacky.

This name is going to be one of those very popular names. When the little girls with this name go to school there will be two or three others with that name in their class.

  • At 5:56 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Proselytizing is the act of attempting to convert people to another opinion and, particularly, another religion...are you serious Walter??? Where do you people come up with such nonsense??? Heaven backwards is hell??? Unbelievable!!

The comments are more hilarious than the story. Those critical of this post are either a) named Nevaeh (ugh, I feel dumber just typing it), b) named their unfortunate child Nevaeh, or c) know and love an unfortunately-named Nevaeh.

The most hilarious thing about the comments is the people who think it's some sleight against their religious beliefs. What is the deal with Christians having a chip on their shoulder?

The vast majority of people who read the name "Nevaeh" will simply roll their eyes. A very very small number of people will clap their hands and marvel at how clever they think the name is.

I'm here to tell you that the name flat out sucks. It's awful, looks ugly when spelt out, and cannot be pronounced "ne-vay-uh." Idiots.

I bet 99% of 'Nevaeh's' are born to parents under the age of 15. BAD NAME!!

  • At 3:17 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Every baby I know named Nevaeh was born to a teenage parent with a dirtbag father.

Nothing wrong with religious names - Gabriel, Jonah, Joshua - all perfectly cute. But Nevaeh? Just plain tacky.

There are porn stars, whores, children who are born to girls under 15 an children born to people who have a low IQ with the name Jessica or Brittney or Amber or Walter or whatever... Yall are idiotic to even talk bad about a ... name. Its a name. An when they go to school... there will be 4 Tonya's an Lisa's an Karens... so what.. And I dont think "Christians" have a chip on their shoulder, as much as individuals.. stop grouping people. Nobody is the same. And you should feel more dumb for writing out the word Ugh..

Wow its really funny how people make such a big deal about other peoples business....if you don't like the name Neveah don't name your kid it....my daughters name is Neveah and I love it I'm not religious at all and relly don't care that its supposed to be heaven backwards...I like the way it sounds who cares if there's going to be other kids with the same name...I'm sure there will be more Ashley's and danielles then Neveahs...bottom line is you don't like the name dont use it that simple!!!!

  • At 1:07 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Neveah is fine. Naming your kid Nevaeh and pronouncing it "Ne-vay-ah" is another thing. If you want your kid's name to be Nevaeh, pronounce the letters correctly and say Ne-vay or, if you hate your child, Ne-vah-aye

I think the name is rather a bad choice for such a popular name. What would the next weird name be? Legna? Angel spelled backwords? or Lleh? Hell spelled backwords? In my opinion, I think these names are ridiculous. Remeber to those who are on the oppising side, that this is only my opinion.

You all are idiots its a sad society when one idiot person puts down another over a name. I think the name is beautiful. Why shouldn't you name your daughter nevaeh.. make your own path stop fallowing each others. God wouldn't judge a person by their name. Christians are more likely to judge because they think they are speaking for God it makes me laugh. You go to church one day out of the week and sin for 6. Be a leader not a fallower who gives two shits what people think as long as you yourself likes the name that's all that really matters.

  • At 5:43 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

People have issues. Name your child what you want pronounce it how ever you want. People think they have the right to tell you how and when you should say or do things. Be your own. Only God can judge. Its not a bad thing or is it a sin to name your child nevaeh.

The reason I ask is because your layout seems different then most blogs and I'm looking for something unique.

We named our little girl Neveah, not because of any meaning or special spelling. We think it has a pretty and sweet sound to it-- that's all. We are not Evangelical, we are not illiterate (my husband and I have 3 Master's degrees between us), as some will accuse of people who give their children this name. She is a lovely and bright baby, and I hope she will prove wrong all the judgmental folks who want to mindlessly classify anyone with a certain name as being "trashy" or "stupid." In my opinion, stereotyping or alienating anyone based on his/her name alone is the trashy and stupid action here.

Nevaeh is a "lower class" name. That is why a lot of foster children have the name. Most of the people on here commenting that they love it cannot write a sentence. Look at the comment above. My children write better than this adult woman. The name Nevaeh is likely only given by lower class, uneducated people. I am sure there are rare exceptions though.

Also when you ask my daughter about her name, she will clearly tell you that she got her name because it is spelt backwards of were her brother is.
